If you ask me can I use a mobile phone in flight, I would say sure. It is one of the most convenient ways to stay connected with your family and loved ones while on the road. There are some precautions you need to follow as well. I am not suggesting you try to talk or text while you are flying. What I am suggesting is that you use your hands and some other things that will help you stay safe.
The first thing you should do is to put your mobile phone in flight mode. It is very possible that you already have set it to airplane mode. But if not, you have to do it. You can use the auto-power off feature to turn off the mobile phone and other electrical devices such as a charger if you are using one.
Next, you should put your mobile phone in its airplane mode. Your battery should be charged enough so that you can use it for a long period of time. If it is totally dead, you should put it on vibrate or charge it again.
Then, the next thing that you should do is to turn off the mobile phone. Don't just leave it on because you don't know when the authorities would find you or pick you up. Put the phone somewhere where you can find it easily such as in your pocket or purse. It should also be in an area where it will not affect the performance of the phone. Just in case if you left it on the table in your hotel room and somebody finds it, the phone is already disabled so there is no use in activating it.
Next, you should remove all the important papers from your mobile phone. I'm serious - take them out of your phone. These papers can be used as evidence if the authorities need to bust you. If you have any text messages or emails to take with you, delete them now. You don't want to risk being caught without any means of communication.
The third thing that you have to remember is to use your phone in flight in a very conservative manner. Don't do anything stupid that can get your phone in trouble. For example, text messages are prohibited unless you're using a pay as you go phone. You have the right to check your messages but you should behave accordingly when you receive or send them. Don't use your phone in any way that will jeopardize your safety.
The fourth step that you need to do is to set your mobile phone to airplane mode. This is the mode that should be used to call, send and receive emails and perform other business-related tasks on your phone. Leave everything else on the standard network. Just make sure that your mobile phone has a data connection ready for airplane mode so you can use it even during your flight. You might also want to set up your email and contacts on your phone before you leave so you won't have any problems later on.
The fifth step to follow is to turn off any cell phone function that you may not be using. This includes things like call waiting, Bluetooth and other functions. You also need to unplug any wireless devices that are connected to your phone when you're travelling. These wireless devices can be very dangerous because they might be transmitting signals to areas that aren't secure, which can create safety issues.
